Mohamad Osman | Yama Anta Wahshny (Sono Cairo, 1970)

This record does not appear to have been catalogued on Discogs; however, the Sono Cairo release just prior to it, 21-72094, is by the same 19th Century composer, Mohamad Osman (aka Muḥammad ᾽Uthman) and was published in 1970. We assume, therefore, that this was part of a limited series from that year focused on Osman's compositions.

Osman, who passed away in 1900, was popular and/or important enough to have made the transition into the recorded-sound era, with a number of interpretations of his work on 78s by the likes of Abdel Hayy Hilmi (Osman's student), on up to a handful of appearances in the digital age (we'd love, for instance, to get our hands on a copy of this 16-CD compilation, which includes more than a dozen of Osman's compositions).

We do, however, have questions about the 45 we're offering today. Was it a 1970 recording? Was it an earlier shellac recording simply transferred to vinyl? We doubt the latter, but it is true that this record is challenged with quite a bit of surface noise, considering that it looks to be VG++ or even NM, and was given a water-bath cleaning just like all of our other singles.
