Hani Shaker | Kadih Bardih Yaqmir (Saut El Hob, 1973)

Happy New Year, everyone. Today, we're sharing one of our most prized possessions, a live recoding on 7" vinyl of Hani Shaker performing Khaled al-Amir's "Kadih Bardih Yaqmir."

Egyptian composer Khaled al-Amir began studies at the Arab Music Institute at the age of 11. He composed for many artists, including Shadia and Maha Sabry, but was most famously linked to Hani Shaker, for whom he composed some 50 songs. The two were lifelong companions and, when al-Amir died in 2021 from Covid, the press turned to Shaker to comment on the passing of his collaborator and friend.

Whereas Egyptian LPs of this era tend to include more concert recordings than those of most other countries, it is uncommon for live versions of Egyptian songs to be released on 45s. This is that rare-ish exception.

The record is a bit rough around the edges, but we love this track (and, to be perfectly honest, the cover!) so much, we decided to share it with you on this (checks calendar) second day of the new year.

Have a great one, everybody!

  1. It was common for that era to print on 45's, after the 1970's the vinyl's production became less and less...
