Ahmed Adaweya | Sah Dah Anboh (Chandor)
This is a French pressing of what might be Ahmed Adaweya's biggest single, given that it was reissued at least half a dozen different times in three different countries. It also made it onto at least one cassette and two CD compilations we have: Best of and Very Best of, the latter having been purchased on a whim at the Nile Deli on Steinway Street in our neighborhood several years ago and our introduction to what has become our favorite living Egyptian singer.
There's a photo of Abdel Halim Hafez singing this very song -- often transliterated al-Sah al-Dah Ambu -- at a party with Adaweya. When the photo was leaked and went viral, Hafez denied the incident had happened. (Get this terrific book by Andrew Simon for the whole story; and listen to our interview with him on our WFMU/Give the Drummer Radio show.)
We love the main track, and we think you will too, if you haven't yet heard it. But it's the B-side -- a mawal simply titled "mawal" on its original Egyptian 1973 release -- that floors us.
We recently acquired a number of Adaweya's singles and will likely be ripping and sharing a few others as this blog continues to grow.
