Doktor / Sakran (His Master's Voice, 1960)
Crowned Syrian Queen of Elegance in 1954, Maha Abel Wahab soon moved to Beirut where she rose to notoriety as a scandalous singer who'd take lyrics from songs made famous by Oum Kalthoum and Abdul Halim Hafez, and replace words and passages to transform them into being about one thing and one thing alone: S-E-X.
Discogs lists one LP from 1963 and 17 singles from 1960 to 1972. An article online in Arabic suggests that she appeared on the scene rather suddenly and mysteriously, and vanished in a similar fashion.
Today's offering -- our first single from 1960 -- features two pop-perfect (or -pervert) tracks credited to the singer: "Doktor" and "Sakran," which means "pissed," "tanked," or "boozy."
We'd love to get our hands on the lyrics.
